Tips for Traveling While Pregnant

Many couples are now celebrating the pending arrival of their first child with what is known as a ‘Baby moon’.

The intention of the baby moon is to relax and enjoy time with your significant other in lovely, relaxing holiday location, reading yourselves for the impending arrival and addition to your family.

We have compiled a checklist to help you plan for a successful stress free holiday with no unexpected surprises.

1. Get clearance from your medical provider

It is always a good idea to visit your health care provider first and let them know your intention to travel. If you are fit and well and have experienced a complicated free pregnancy you are likely to get the all clear. Alternatively if you have had a troublesome pregnancy traveling too far away from your health care provider is may not be a wise decision.

2. Choose your destination wisely

A recommendation is to avoid destinations with poor sanitization, health and immunization standards. (Speak with your health care provider about the potential risks of immunizations when pregnant).

These destinations can also have issues with contamination of its water and/ or food supplies. The risk of food poisoning, stomach bugs, diarrhea and other sicknesses are much higher, which could be harmful to you and your unborn baby.

Avoiding potential riskier foods is another option;

  • Ice
  • Water
  • Uncooked fruit and vegetables
  • Fish or meat that has not been completely cooked through
  • Unpasteurized milk

3. Travel time

At the later stages of pregnancy sitting for longer periods of time can be uncomfortable. If you choose to fly to your destination, choose a location within about a 3-hour flight. Any longer and the body may start to feel uncomfortable and fatigued.

It is our recommendation to also check with the airline before committing to a booking, as some restrictions of flying when pregnant may apply and could differ from airline to airline.

If you plan to travel by car, plan for plenty of stops. Sitting for long periods in a car can become extremely uncomfortable.

Comfortable clothing, shoes, plenty of water and sugar sweets will keep your energy levels high and your body well hydrated too.

4. Medical services

Choose a destination that has good medical facilities that are close by. Sometimes the unexpected can happen and the need for emergency services may occur.

Take medical and travel insurance if leaving the country as a safe guard and always take your pre-natal care records with you.

5. Climate

At the later stages of your pregnancy a women’s body can become uncomfortable and irritable with a tendency to swell.

Choose a destination where the temperature is warm but not too hot or humid.

6. Relax

Enjoy your time away. Use the time to connect with your partner and recharge. Celebrate and visualize the inclusion of a young one of your very own!

Avoid too many planned activities, especially risky ones and spend your days reading a book or lazing by the pool.

7. Clothing

Pack sensible clothing. Cool, loose fitting clothing will make your feel relaxed and less restricted.

The important thing to remember is that you do not need to go far to get away from the hussle and bussle of everyday life.

A baby moon does not need to be elaborate just relaxing!
